Brazilian Constructivist artist Lygia Clark created her Modulated Surfaces series in the late 1950s, working to free her paintings from the confines of a frame. Her geometric shapes project beyond the boundaries, expanding past the canvas or wood.
Here, I took her Espaço Modulado (1957) which stands as an example of her early Concrete Art phase, and created a more colorful version, gilded with gold leaf. The gilding works to spotlight the utter simplicity of Clark’s original, monochromatic design.
